Kanye West, Taylor Swift, a defining moment

As the internet is abuzz about Kanye West’s actions towards Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards, I am going to add my commentary.  To recap, Kanye interrupts Taylor during her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards because Kanye did not believe that Taylor was the most deserving.

To start, I want to offer my congratulations to Taylor Swift for winning her award and bridging the gap between country music fans and hip hop fans across the world.  I sure hope President Obama was not on Facebook last night, because teens across the globe were calling Kanye words that a parent should not read.  Many of you might remember that President Obama during his address to schools last week asked that our children be careful with what they post on Facebook.  With the exception of the hard core language, I agree with our youth on this one.

Taylor won because she crossed multi-dimensional boundaries.  That alone would have made Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior proud for Taylor’s achievements.  Dr. King, your  “I Have a Dream” speech continues to beam with brilliant light.  “Little black boys and black girls [joined virtual] hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers” on Facebook last night in support of Taylor.  Regardless of what the historians say, this was a defining moment in history.

Someone asked me how I would feel if the same thing happened to me because I aim to bridge the gap between urban fiction and crime fiction readers.  I gave this question much thought.   This I do know. When I do take the grand stage, I will keep my cool with the same dignity and professionalism as Taylor Swift did at the MTV VMA awards last night.  She is an example for us all, young and old.

Peace,

Kevin M. Weeks,  Author of  The Street Life Series
